Provider Directory
At the end of 2006, Texas had a total of 399 Medicare approved dialysis facilities located in 102 of the 254 Texas counties. Thus, facilities are located in 40.2 percent of Texas counties, unchanged from 2005. Harris County (Houston area) has the most facilities (n=70), Bexar County (San Antonio area) the second highest number (n=47) and Dallas County (Dallas area) the third highest number (n=40). Even when Fort Worth (n= 25) is combined with Dallas to encompass the DFW Metroplex with 65 facilities, the area trails Houston.
Twenty-four transplant centers and one special renal children's camp were also in operation. In 2006, 8,162 dialysis stations were available for use in dialysis facilities as reported in the SIMS system, a 3 percent increase from 2005. Dialysis facilities are concentrated in highly populated urban areas, and also in some border counties. There are three VA, three military, and two criminal justice non-Medicare Certified dialysis facilities operating in Texas.
As has been true for a number of years, the majority of facilities are owned by National Corporations (Chart 3). Between 2005 and 2006, the proportion of facilities owned by national dialysis corporations increased from 71% to 80% while independently owned facilities decreased from 12% to 9% and regional chains decreased from 12% to 6%.
