Healthcare associated infections (HAIs) are costly to society and can be deadly. Accurate surveillance and reporting of HAIs can lead to improved patient outcomes and changes to healthcare processes related to the reduction and elimination of HAIs. The National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), which is managed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is a secure, internet-based surveillance system which collects and analyzes data from healthcare facilities in the United States, including outpatient dialysis facilities.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) published the final rule for the ESRD Quality Incentive Program (QIP) measures in November 2011. Included in the measures to be used for performance year 2012, which is tied to payment year 2014, is the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) Dialysis Event reporting measure which is comprised of two items that providers/facilities must successfully complete:

    (i) enrollment in the NHSN and completion of the required training…(as verified by a digital certificate obtained from CDC)…; and
(ii) submission of at least three-consecutive months of dialysis event data gathered during the performance period

To meet this requirement, facilities must complete required training, complete all enrollment steps, and report data according to NHSN protocols.
The ESRD Network of Texas, Inc. has developed tools and resources and placed direct links to NHSN pages on CDC’s website to assist dialysis facilities with enrollment and participation in NHSN. Including this Overview Section, this toolkit is comprised of five sections denoted by the toolkit symbol:

    • OVERVIEW
    • ENROLLMENT
    • MONTHLY FORM SUBMISSION & REPORTING DIALYSIS EVENTS
